The park was developed during the early years when the fishing industry started in Karumba.

The main reason most people come to Karumba is for the fishing & sightseeing. We have fabulous sunsets. The fishing off the beach and near the boat ramps is good.

This is the only stretch of beach that can be reached by a sealed road in the Gulf Savannah region. Well known for its fishing and prawning, this area is also rich in bird-life, particularly after the wet season. Karumba was once a base for Empire flying boats on their journey from Sydney to London and later as a Royal Australian Air Force base for Catalina Flying Boats. Karumba Point has a history that goes back as far as 1872.

Gee-Dee's Family Cabins at Karumba Point offer affordable family-style, couple or fisherperson accommodation on the Gulf of Carpentaria at the mouth of the Norman River. Your stay will be in family owned and operated, motel-like cabins, or a three bedroom holiday house, that offers you the latest in modern, clean, air conditioned rooms. Your hosts Sharon and Jeff are able to offer local advice and assistance to make your stay at Karumba an enjoyable one. The waters of Karumba contain a variety of marine life. You can fish from the beach or from a boat at any time. Gee-Dee's have four 4.4 metre aluminium boats with 25 horsepower motors for hire. In addition there is a 4.55 metre Poly Craft with a 40 horsepower motor and large self-drive barbecue boat, all of which require a boat licence. All boats are supplied with ice, esky, fuel, cushions and canopy. Boats are launched and retrieved at the nearby boat ramp at the entrance to the Norman River. The whole mood is relaxed as travellers, fishermen, birdwatchers and locals gather in the late afternoon to enjoy the "million dollar sunset" across the Gulf of Carpentaria.

They depart daily and offer half and full day all inclusive fishing trips suitable for all ages. The boats are easy to board, fish all round, comfortable to travel in, they have full shade canopy, toilet on board and are very stable vessels that are specifically designed for this area. Your skipper, local owner Darryl, will take you out to get hooked on the many species that inhabit the gulf waters, from the mighty fighting Mackerel and King Salmon to the great Southern Gulf Barra. All fishing gear - quality bait, shimano bait runner reels, abu rods and an assortment of tackle is included in your half or full day fishing expedition.
