Ranges Hotel

73 Main Street, Gembrook VIC 3783
The Ranges Hotel at Gembrook in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges has been a central point for the town since 1896. Mr John McMahon left his job as Mayor of Fitzroy in 1890 to seek a more peaceful atmosphere at Gembrook bringing with him the timber and fittings from an old church which had been demolished in that suburb. From them he built The Ranges Hotel to his own design. The Ranges Hotel is open for lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and dinner from Thursday to Sunday, and caters for birthdays, celebrations, weddings and other functions. Our large Bistro with children’s play area and open fires has seating for up to 120 diners with direct access to the large shaded deck and beer garden, while The Bird Room also with an open fire and seating for up to 50 guests offers a wonderful alternative for that special romantic dinner.

Only 60 minutes drive from Melbourne city centre, Alkira is an idyllic rural retreat that is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Situated on a park-like 100 acre property, the cottages sit high on a ridge, looking over the adjacent State Park to a 180 degree panorama of scenic countryside, rolling hills and rugged mountains in the distance. Our 2 Cottages have been built to a wonderful traditional design with exposed beams and extensive internal timber work. They are beautifully furnished with solid Baltic pine furniture and colour-coordinated cottage print fabrics. Naturally they have open fires with a plentiful supply of firewood. Each cottage has it's own spa, which is truly something special. Very private, discretely set in a landscaped garden with fragrant bushes and trees, they are under cover, have wind protection and are usable at any time of the year, in any kind of weather. The perfect way to refresh the body on a slow, sleepy, summer's afternoon or even better; gaze, whilst luxuriating in steamy hot water, at the night sky on a cold, frosty, winter night. There is simply no substitute for a traditional open log fire. Bring a book and luxuriate in the warm glow of the flames, pausing reading every now again to take a sip of wine and look out across the trees at the ever-changing vista of the distant ranges. The cottages have music systems and VCR's. Be sure to bring some of your favourite music and perhaps a couple of videos.

Bunyip State Park

Via Gembrook-Launching Place Rd, Gembrook VIC 3783
See a mosiac of green from heathland on river plains to Mountain Ash forest covering steep slopes. Whatever recreational pursuit you enjoy, Bunyip State Park provides opportunities for all. The legend of the bunyip Beware of the Bunyip, a dark furry animal with a round face, small ears and fiery eyes that glow in the dark. According to the Aboriginal people, the Bunyip or "Buneep" (as spelt on early maps which show the river, first cattle run and township) is a spirit that punishes bad people. Local Aboriginal people believed the Bunyip lived in the swamps of the Bunyip River, and therefore avoided the area. Many early settlers, believing this story, never pitched their tents near a 'Bunyip hole'. People were also careful not to make ripples when collecting water. This upset the Bunyip. Before you go Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website. Be bushfire ready in the great outdoors. Refer to the Bushfire Safety section on the Parks Victoria website for tips on how to stay safe....
